KOTA BARU: A group of 95 Thais, many of whom are women married to local men here, were overjoyed when they received permanent resident (PR) status yesterday.

Kelantan Immigration director Mahasan Mustapa said the recipients were from Thailand and came here to either work or to follow their Malaysian husbands.

He said the government decided to grant them PR status after taking into consideration that they had been living here for decades.

“Although the PR status allows them to stay here legally, they are not allowed to join any political parties and vote. Those caught doing so will have the status revoked , ” he said after the presentation ceremony by the Home Ministry’s senior deputy secretary-general, Datuk Raja Azahar Raja Abdul Manap.

The PR status is granted to foreign citizens under the Immigration Act and Regulations 1959/63.

Recipients will be issued with an entry permit and an identification card (MyPR).

Foreign citizens with PR status will be exempted from all visa requirements to enter and remain in Malaysia.

One such recipient, 40-year-old mother of four Syerifah Sulong from Kuala Krai, said she was glad to be able to move around without fear of being caught.

“I was always worried of being caught as I am staying here illegally.

“I had to take the risk of travelling between here and my hometown in Yala, southern Thailand.

“Now, I am glad I can move around freely, ” she said.

Private teacher Azmi Ishak, 29, from Meranti in Pasir Mas, said that with the PR status, he would not have to look over his shoulders for fear of being caught.

He was also looking forward to travelling back to visit his family in Thailand.
