456 rape cases reported in Selangor in eight months
A TOTAL of 2,426 rape cases were reported from January to August this year, with the largest number coming from Selangor.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said 456 rapes were reported in Selangor in the first eight months of the year while the state with the least number of cases was Perlis with 18.
Incest cases, on the other hand, totalled 289 during the period.
"The largest number of incest cases reported was in Johor with 43, while Perlis had only one," he said in a written reply in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.
"Sexual crimes like rape, incest and sexual harassment are inhumane offences. The police view such crimes very seriously as the majority of victims are children, who are still weak and naive."
He was replying to Teresa Koh (DAP-Seputeh), who had asked for figures on rape, incest and sexual harassment and the number of such cases which had been heard in court.
Sexual harassment cases in the first eight months of this year totalled 1,441.
The state with the most reported cases was Johor, which had 216 cases while Perlis had the least number of cases at 20.
"For the period from January to August, 119 out of the 2,426 accused in rape cases have been charged in court.
"Out of the total sexual harassment cases, 73 or five per cent of the accused have been charged."
