MALACCA'S special school for pregnant teenagers, which is scheduled to open on Wednesday, has received three applications.

Malacca Islamic Council deputy chairman Datuk Ghazale Muhamad said the applications were made by the guardians of the pregnant teenagers through its hotline.

"We have received three applications from the girls' family members who want to put the teens in our Sekolah Harapan."

Ghazale was speaking after opening the state Islamic Spiritual Enhancement for Cultural Artists Programme at Auditorium Seri Negeri, Ayer Keroh, Malacca, yesterday.

The programme, attended by about 400 participants, was organised by the state Malaysia Art Institute with the cooperation of the state government's Rumahku Syurgaku Department.

On Sekolah Harapan, Ghazale said a committee, headed by former state Education Department director Tan Sri Rahman Arshad, would go through each application and advise the families involved on the girls' future.

The school will occupy the premises previously used by Syarikat Air Melaka Berhad in Jasin.

Students who need accommodation will be placed in Rumah Harapan nearby.

Ghazale said 60 per cent of the renovation work on the building had been completed.

For a start, the school will take in between 20 and 30 students.

Ghazale said the state government would discuss with the Education Ministry and Health Ministry on providing education and healthcare for the students.

He said instead of attending normal classes, the girls would be given tuition to prepare them for examinations.

"We will discuss with the Health Ministry if it is possible to place permanent staff to take care of the girls."
