Futile effort if kids get no love, says Shahrizat
But they would only be effective with parental love and care, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.
She said parents should show how much they loved and cared for their children.
"In today's world, everybody is busy. We have people looking after our children, either the teachers, babysitters or other people.
"What the children need are love, care and guidance," she said after a briefing on the ministry's social entrepreneurial programme for elected representatives and government agencies in Johor yesterday.
Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman was also present.
Shahrizat said in most cases, youngsters involved in social problems were mostly those who did not get enough attention from their parents.
She said the family institution was no longer functional and this resulted in children becoming victims when their parents were too busy to give them attention.
"In the past, when the father is busy, the mother takes over the role of taking care of the children. And if both are busy, the grandparents take over. Now, everybody is busy," she said.
The issue of low-income households and National Key Result Areas were also discussed during the meeting.
On social entrepreneurship programmes under her ministry, Shahrizat said it was aimed at reducing the number of hardcore poor families, comprising those with household income of less than RM440.
They would be assisted to get out of the vicious circle of poverty through 1Azam programmes like Azam Niaga, Azam Tani, Azam Kerja and Azam Khidmat.
Shahrizat said the Iskandar Regional Development Authority was involved in the effort.
Under the project, a total of 70 hardcore poor households led by family heads (ketua isi rumah) had participated in Azam Tani, 63 in Azam Niaga, 48 in Azam Kerja and 30 in Azam Khidmat.
Shahrizat expressed hope that the 1Azam programmes can become an example for other agencies in efforts to eradicate poverty nationwide.
