GEORGE TOWN: The nuisance posed by the beach boys at Batu Ferringhi has taken a violent turn when a resort guest was assaulted.

The incident involved a family from Kuala Lumpur who were holidaying at the resort.

It was triggered after the husband told off the beach boys for riding their speedboat close to where his wife and children were swimming.

This angered the beach boys who later ganged-up and assaulted him in front of his family.

Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa director of communications Sulaimen Tunku Abdul Rahman said the guest was angry at such loutish treatment at the hands of these unlicensed water sports operators.

Sulaimen said the host resort bore the brunt of the guest's disgust when he expressed disappointment at the resort's inability to control the beach touts.

He said the police and the local authorities must take immediate action to control the beach touts.

He said the hotel was unable to take the law into its own hands which would add unnecessary friction and ill feeling between its staff and the unlicensed rabble.

Sulaimen has called for the beach touts scourge to be nipped in the bud for the sake of Penang's reputation.

"As a tourist destination, we look forward to the day when order, discipline, goodwill and responsible behaviour prevail at Batu Feringghi's public beach," he said.

It was reported that the state administration's failure to solve the problems caused by beach touts had prompted hoteliers to seek the Federal Government's help.

The Penang chapter of the Malaysian Association of Hotels had written to Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen, inviting her to a roundtable discussion and briefing on the escalating problems at the popular beach front.

The beach tout incident was highlighted in popular international travel website TripAdvisor.
